Shariah Screening Criteria
For a stock or fund to be halal, it must pass both business activity screening (no prohibited industries) and financial ratio screening (debt-to-market-cap typically below 33%, interest income below 5% of total revenue). Several screening services exist including MSCI Islamic Index, Dow Jones Islamic Market Index, and AAOIFI standards.
