What is Sadaqah?
Sadaqah refers to voluntary charitable giving in Islam — any act of giving to others without expectation of return. Unlike Zakat (which is obligatory), Sadaqah is entirely voluntary and can be given in any amount at any time.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire." (Tirmidhi). Even a smile, removing a harmful object from a path, or sharing knowledge are forms of Sadaqah.
Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) — such as funding a well, building a school, or teaching someone useful knowledge — continues to bring reward after death.
