Ruling: Zakat al-Fitr is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who possesses food beyond their needs on the day of Eid. It is 1 Sa' (≈ 2.5–3 kg) of staple food, or its cash equivalent, per person.

What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr (also called Fitrana or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a mandatory charitable contribution made by every Muslim at the end of Ramadan. It was prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to purify the fasting person from any indecent acts or speech during Ramadan and to provide food for the poor so they can celebrate Eid.

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscene speech, and to feed the poor." (Abu Dawud)

Who must pay Zakat al-Fitr?

Can I pay Zakat al-Fitr in cash?
The majority opinion (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) is that it must be paid in food. The Hanafi school permits cash equivalent, and many contemporary scholars allow cash for ease of distribution. Check with your local mosque or scholar.
When is the best time to pay?
It can be paid from the beginning of Ramadan up until just before the Eid prayer. The last 2–3 days of Ramadan are most common so that recipients receive it in time for Eid.
Who can receive Zakat al-Fitr?
The same eight categories eligible for regular Zakat, with priority given to the local poor so they can celebrate Eid with dignity.
